Sticky Hands, Warm Heart

Last weekend we turned a handful of yarn into a hangable heart ornament or actually a necklace using cornstarch glue. I saw this idea in the Family Fun Magazine. To make the glue you combine 1/4 cup of cornstarch and 1/2 cup of water in a saucepan and stir until smooth. Heat the mixture over medium heat until it's thick and translucent. Allow to cool - you don't want your little one to burn fingers! Then we cut yarn into foot-long pieces. Push the yarn into the glue to coat it and then pick up a piece and run between fingers to remove excess. Lay the yarn inside a heart shaped (or shape of your choice) cookie cutter. Repeat until yarn fills up shape. Press flat, remove cutter and allow to dry. Chloe had a lot of fun with this project! Pressing the yarn into the glue was her favorite part.
